About Logan
I started cycling in 2004, beginning with schools racing. The Waterfront Team Time Trials on Tamaki Drive, North Islands, Northern Tour, Nationals, and similar events shaped my early years in the sport. When I left school, I felt like I was just getting started and wanted to keep going. So, I did—and I represented New Zealand, racing internationally from about 2007 to 2012.
While I was racing, I began studying for a degree in sport and exercise science, which I completed in 2013. Around that time, I started coaching 1–2 athletes, and things grew rapidly from there. I was contracted to GMC Cycling until 2016, during which I gained invaluable experience and began to clarify the type of coach I wanted to become.
Starting Grit in mid-2016 allowed me to focus on coaching fewer athletes and refining my approach in what I consider to be a complex craft.
In 2020, I became more involved in coaching development opportunities with Cycling New Zealand, a role I continue to this day. This has included working in multiple Junior Worlds and Elite Track Camps, initially with Tim Carswell and, in recent years, with Andrew Williams and Adrian Hegyvary. In 2022 I took the Junior National Team to the Tour of Abitibi in Canada acting as team manager.
Since 2021, I’ve been part of the High Performance Sport NZ coach development core knowledge program. This has provided access to high-performance mentors in coaching, nutrition, medicine, and psychology, among other areas, and has significantly deepened my understanding of high-performance pathways and international best practices.
I have served as head coach at Sacred Heart College. In 2022, I took the role as Head of Cycling at St Kentigern College. In 2024/ 2025 season I took the role of head coach of the Auckland Track Cycling.
What has kept me motivated all these years boils down to two key things. First, I genuinely enjoy helping people achieve their goals and facilitating a positive learning and experience in the sport. I see sport as a powerful tool for developing human potential both on and off the bike—especially for younger athletes. When done the right way, it can help to develop valuable skills that can be applied in all areas of life.
The second thing that drives me as a coach is learning. Essentially, my job is to learn. Sport evolves rapidly, and with information so accessible now, it’s crucial to critically evaluate how we can continue to improve.
While I’m not as competitive as I once was, I still enjoy training and racing. The birth of my daughter in 2022 has given me a new perspective on my own cycling. My main motivation now is to model that sport and competition are a lifestyle.
I feel extremely lucky and privileged to be able to do what I do.
